Is It Fashionable To Hate The Beatles?

So far most of my posts have been in a happy, everything is good in life vein. But all of us know that life is NOT like that. So today I am going to rant!!

So is it fashionable to hate The Beatles??? Yes I think it is in certain music listening circles. On certain prog rock forums some people absolutely hate The Beatles. This coming from a bunch of people who consider their music tastes "superior" to the rest... Well if you can't get the genius of The Beatles I think there is something drastically wrong with your music acumen. Some of them don't like the Beatles because of their simple, catchy tunes. What's wrong with that??? Music doesn't have to be complex to be great. One of the toughest things to do is write a really good simple song. Most competent musicians can dazzle with solos and technical skills but a good tune coupled with good lyrics is a work of art. By the way not everything in the Beatles' catalog is simple. Abbey Road is an album way ahead of it's time. Just listen to the 2nd half. Sgt Pepper's, Magical Mystery tour fall in the same category. Did anyone do anything like "I Am The Walrus" or "Strawberry Fields Forever" back then...I don't think so! Besides a lot of musicians today respect them. If the fab four are good enough for them, they are good enough for me. The Flower Kings even have an album called "Space Revolver"

Others consider The Beatles "pussy music". I feel that's macho drivel. Music is music for god sakes. Take it for what it is and not the image associated with it. Sadly, this is a very common thing, and the only people losing out are the ones who don't listen to music with an open mind.

According to me, The Beatles are one of the rare acts in music history where public acclaim/popularity was totally justified. They were THAT good and they changed the music scene drastically. Some of their recording techniques and ideas were considered groundbreaking back then. They did experiment (sitars, string sections, things like that) but most of it was in good taste.

Ok end of rant :). Merry Xmas!! :)

Thanks for the comment Joe. And yah the Beatles had a huge influence on the groups that followed them for a long time to come. Even now almost 40 yrs down the line groups name The Beatles as an influence.

"For someone to say they hate The Beatles implies that they also hate most every band that followed them too. That's how important they were." <--- How true
